Linear operators are reliable, but their mounting hardware lives outdoors in Texas heat and humidity cycles. Steel expands and contracts every single day. Over five or six years, that stress finds the weakest weld. In Frisco specifically, clay soil shifting under concrete gate posts adds a second stress vector. The post moves a quarter inch. Which Linear Models This Applies To

Linear’s residential and light-commercial swing and slide operators share common mounting geometry, but there’s a compatibility gotcha worth knowing before anyone welds anything. The Linear LRA and LRA-S swing operators (and the older EXS and EGR series) use different bolt patterns than the newer Linear LS and LSO slide series. A bracket built for an LRA won’t bolt to an LSO cleanly, and forcing it means drilling the chassis, which voids any existing warranty and weakens the gate-side mount.

To identify what you have, look at the motor cover: Linear stamps the series and model just above the terminal strip. If the label is gone, measure the distance between the two chassis mounting bolts center to center. LRA and EXS swing arms run 4-3/16 inches. LS slide units run 3-11/16 inches. Half an inch separates a ten-minute bolt-on from a custom fabrication.

On the OEM versus aftermarket question: we prefer OEM Linear brackets and lugs when the model is current and the part is in stock from a distributor. For discontinued EXS-era parts, we fabricate our own. We’ve built replacement swing-arm ears, slide-carrier wear plates, and post-mount saddles for Linear units in Frisco that have no OEM replacement available anywhere. The steel we use is A36 plate or 6061 aluminum when the original was aluminum. The difference matters. Putting a heavier steel bracket on an older aluminum arm just moves the failure point into the arm itself, and that’s a bigger problem than the bracket ever was.

Signs Your Linear Welding & Fabrication Is Failing

• The gate sags or scrapes the concrete in one spot. A worn hinge weld or a stretched slide-carrier mount changes the gate’s travel geometry. You’ll see a bright scrape line at the highest point of the concrete under the swing path, or fresh metal dust at the slide rail. The part isn’t correcting itself; it’s telling you where it failed.
• The operator strains at one point in the travel and then surges. When a bracket or hinge weld stretches, the mechanical advantage changes mid-cycle. The motor pulls harder through the damaged section, then leaps through it once the geometry unwinds. Listen for the pitch change. It’s the sound of a weld working loose.
• You can see the crack before you hear anything. Powder coat hides stress fractures until they open. Run a finger along the weld line at the operator-to-gate arm connection, the post-side hinge, and the slide-carrier plate. Any ridge, flake, or hairline line is worth a photo and a phone call.
• The gate stops mid-cycle and reversed for no visible reason. Linear control boards watch current draw. A binding mount pushes draw past the limit, and the board shuts the run down as if it hit an obstruction. We see this pattern a lot in Frisco neighborhoods like Starwood, where heavy ornamental gates on older posts develop compound alignment issues. The board isn’t bad. The steel under it moved.
• A weld has already broken once and been re-welded. A field weld over a cracked chassis weld without proper post-weld stress relief will re-crack, usually within eighteen months. If there’s a previous repair bead on the part, and that bead is starting to open at the toe, the correct fix is fabrication of a new component or a properly gusseted repair, not another pass over the old crack.

DIY or Call Us?

Welding on a gate that’s under spring tension or holding a 400-pound leaf up at the hinge point is the wrong place to learn stick welding. The danger is real: a gate that drops when a hinge weld gives can crush whatever is under it. A slide gate under load can move unexpectedly when a carrier mount releases. We’ll say it plainly: if the failure is at a load-bearing weld, a hinge point, or the operator chassis, call a professional. The risk isn’t the electricity. It’s the stored energy in the gate.

What you can safely check before you call: photograph the failed part with the model label visible, measure the bolt-to-bolt spacing on the mounting hardware if the part is loose, and note whether the gate still operates on manual release. That saves a diagnostic trip and lets us bring the right steel on the first visit. Realistically, that’s where the DIY conversation ends. The actual fabrication requires a welder, a bench, and the judgment to know when a part should be replaced instead of patched. We bring all three.
