Signs Your Viking Keypad & Intercom Repair Is Failing

• The keypad lights up but the gate doesn’t move. This usually means the keypad is sending a signal but the relay on the gate board is not getting it, or the relay itself has burned out after years of cycling. We test the output at the terminal strip before we condemn the keypad.
• Some digits work and others don’t. The carbon contact pads inside Viking keypads wear unevenly. The numbers you use most often, usually the garage code and the gate code, stop registering because the conductive coating has worn away. This is repairable in some cases and a replacement in others.
• The voice on the intercom is faint or sounds like static. In Frisco, we see this a lot on gates near sprinkler lines. The speaker diaphragm inside the intercom has gotten damp or corroded. Sometimes it is just a wiring connection; sometimes the speaker has to be replaced.
• Visitors say the call button does not ring inside the house. On Viking systems, the call path goes from the entry panel through the gate operator board and then to the inside phone or speaker. A dead call button is often a broken wire at the gate hinge, where the cable flexes every time the gate opens.

DIY or Call Us?

What you can safely do yourself: check whether the keypad is getting power by looking at the backlight, and check whether the breaker for the gate outlet has tripped. You can also tighten the small terminal screws where the keypad wires connect to the gate board, but only with the power shut off at the breaker, and only if you are comfortable identifying the low-voltage terminal strip.

What you should not do yourself: run new wiring through the conduit, replace the keypad faceplate on a system with anti-tamper wiring, or attempt any work on the gate board itself. Viking keypads and intercoms run on low voltage, so the shock risk is minimal, but the wiring mistake risk is not. A miswired keypad can send 24 volts into a data line and damage the gate board, turning a $200 keypad repair into a $700 board replacement. We have seen it happen twice this year in Frisco.
