Which Elite Models This Applies To

Elite access hardware splits into a few families, and the compatibility gotchas are real. The older SL-2000 and EL-25 keypads use a simple 12-volt trigger connection, usually two wires back to the gate operator’s open terminal. The newer Elite 2000-series and Elite Pro keypads run on the same trigger logic but add a 24-volt option, which means wiring one incorrectly can burn the keypad board or fail to trip the operator at all. If you’re replacing an Elite receiver, the question is frequency. Most Elite receivers run on 318 MHz or 390 MHz, and the receiver and the remote must match. A 318 MHz remote will not talk to a 390 MHz receiver, no matter how many times you press the button. Genuine Elite OEM parts are still available for most models, but on keypads and receivers we frequently install quality aftermarket equivalents when the OEM part is backordered or priced unreasonably. The aftermarket unit must carry the same voltage rating and the same relay output rating, typically a dry contact or a 12V DC trigger. Signs Your Elite Access Control Installation Is Failing

• Keypad lights up but the gate never moves. The keypad is getting power but the relay output has failed or the trigger wire has pulled loose. We find this most often after heavy storms, when the low-voltage wire running from the keypad to the operator gets nicked or corroded at the splice.
• Gate opens only from remote, never from keypad. This usually isolates the failure to the keypad or its wiring, not the operator. The relay inside the keypad may have stuck, or the keypad may have lost its programming after a power flicker.
• Remote stopped working at the same time as the keypad. When both fail together, the receiver is often to blame. A single Elite receiver typically handles both the keypad trigger and the remote signal. If it loses power or the relay fails, nothing hears any of your input devices.
• Gate opens on its own, or only sometimes. A failing relay or a short in the access wiring can cause phantom triggers. Frisco’s summer heat is a factor: we routinely see keypads mounted in direct afternoon sun where the internal relay contacts degrade after three or four summers.
• You hear a click but the gate just hums or stalls. The access control is working, but the operator is the problem. The click is the relay doing its job. Many Frisco owners assume the keypad failed when the real issue is a bad capacitor or a fried control board in the operator itself.

If the backlight is dead and you have a 12-volt keypad, the problem may be as simple as a popped fuse on the operator board. Second, confirm the gate itself still opens from the manual release. If the gate moves freely by hand, you’re not dealing with a mechanical problem inside the hinge or the motor.

Beyond that, this is not a job for a weekend afternoon. Access control work means low-voltage wiring, relay logic, and an operator board that can be fried by one careless short.
