Linear Gate Motor Replacement: The Frisco Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Linear-compatible gate motors in Frisco, with most residential swing-gate motor replacements running between $850 and $1,450 installed, depending on your Linear model and whether the existing arm bracket and mounting plate can be reused. Most replacements are completed same-day when the motor is on our truck, which it usually is for the common Linear LDO and ASO series. The typical call starts when a gate that worked fine for years suddenly hums without moving, opens halfway and reverses, or stops responding to every remote and keypad at once.

What most Frisco homeowners discover is that Linear gate motors fail in predictable ways, usually at the capacitor, the limit switch assembly, or the gear train. The motor housing itself may be fine, but the components that tell it where to stop and how hard to push degrade first. Texas heat accelerates this: capacitors dry out faster in sustained 90-plus-degree afternoons, and nylon gears get brittle after years of thermal cycling. When we open a failed Linear motor in Frisco, the failure usually looks the same as one from Plano or McKinney, but hot-weather duty cycles mean the window between “intermittent” and “completely dead” shrinks to weeks rather than months.

Tell me what the gate is doing, and I will tell you what it costs to fix it.

Which Linear Models This Applies To

Linear built gate motors under several series names, and parts compatibility is not universal across them. The ones we replace most often in Frisco are the LDO50 swing-gate operator, the ASO series (ASO50, ASO70), and the older LD050 and APeX lines. If your unit has a Linear badge and a swing arm, the model number is printed on a label inside the control board cover, not on the outside of the motor housing. That label matters because a control board from an LDO50 will not run an ASO arm without adapting the harness, and some aftermarket “universal” boards do not understand Linear’s limit-sensor logic.

OEM Linear motors and boards are available for most of these series, though lead times vary. We keep OEM capacitors, limit switches, and control boards in stock, and quality aftermarket arms and motors on the shelf for units where Linear no longer supplies the part. The aftermarket arms we install are sized to match the gate leaf weight and length rather than sold as one-size-fits-few. When a Linear motor has failed beyond repair, the honest answer is sometimes a full replacement with a new Linear-compatible unit rather than a rebuild of a 15-year-old board.

Signs Your Linear Gate Motor Is Failing

Signs Your Linear Gate Motor Is Failing
  • Humming without movement. The motor is receiving power but the capacitor no longer provides the starting torque to get the arm moving. This is the single most common Linear failure we see in Frisco, and it often happens after a cold snap or a storm that kept the gate in one position for days.
  • Gate opens partway and reverses. The limit switch or current-sensing circuit thinks the gate hit an obstruction. In a Linear, a stripped gear or a worn clutch can trigger this even when nothing is in the gate’s path.
  • Dead to every input, no click, no hum. If the remote, keypad, and push button all fail at once, the control board is likely not passing power to the motor. A failed transformer inside the Linear housing is the second culprit, and that part is cheap relative to a board replacement.
  • Signal interference or intermittent operation. A receiver that works only when you are ten feet from the gate often means the receiver antenna wire was pinched during installation, but a failing capacitor can cause the same symptom by drawing intermittent current.
  • A loud grinding or clicking during travel. That is almost always the gear train. Linear gear assemblies are nylon in most residential units, and once teeth strip, the motor runs while the arm no longer moves the gate leaf correctly.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Frisco, a full Linear gate motor replacement runs $850 to $1,450 installed. The spread comes from three things: whether we are replacing the whole operator (motor plus arm plus control board) or only the failed component, whether the existing mounting post and gate bracket are reusable, and which Linear series is involved. A capacitor or limit switch replacement on an LDO50 can run under $300. A full motor-and-board swap on an older LD050 with a rusted mounting plate lands at the top of the range.

Every quote is written, not verbal. The price you sign off on is the price you pay, and it includes the part, labor, travel within the Frisco area, and the photo record of what we removed and what we installed. You also receive the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the replacement isn’t right, we make it right within the year, no fee and no argument. Under Clause 1 of the Haven Standard, the written price comes before any tool touches your gate.

DIY or Call Us?

There are two things an owner in Frisco can safely check before calling us: the breaker that feeds the gate outlet and the condition of the arm bracket bolts. A tripped breaker or a loose bolted connection can mimic a dead motor, and both are safe to inspect with the power off. What we would not recommend is opening a Linear motor housing to replace a capacitor or a limit switch yourself. Those capacitors hold a charge even after the unit is unplugged, and the limit switch is a high-precision component inside a moving mechanism that can pinch or crush a hand. We understand the instinct to save a few hundred dollars, but this is one of those parts where an incorrect install costs more than the service call would have.

Call (940) 290-7996 and we can tell you over the phone whether the symptom sounds like a capacitor, a board, or a gear failure, and what the replacement will cost in writing before we schedule anything.
